We took her home that very night and so began our love of French Bulldogs and a very rocky journey into learning all things Frenchie. But it has not phased us. We are enamoured by them and we refuse to not have them in our lives.
And from Stella, Wheatkings Kennels was born.
We started out by reading everything we could about French Bulldogs, contacting New Zeealand Kennel Club (now DogsNZ) and trying to find someone willing to mentor us so we wouldn't make too many mistakes. Mentoring was challenging and we made lots of mistakes! But here we are today and still surrounded by our Frenchies.
We came across an Australian French Bulldog girl and somehow we knew she was the one. We contacted the Australian breeder and over time, we brought Churro into our family. It wasn't easy, Churro did not like the Kiwi Frenchies, but eventually she found her footing and calmed down! Many years later, Stella is gone to the Rainbow Bridge and Churro is an old lady.
The world of breeding is changing and we are changing with it. Our concern is moving from show quality to health quality. We've never been into showing so we've turned our attention to what matters most to US - creating wonderful healthy French Bulldogs!
WHO WE ARE
Our Name!
Why did we pick the name WheatKings Frenchies? It all started in a small town in Ontario, where I grew up listening to the Tragically Hip rock out at bush parties and summer festivals. The Hip wrote a song called Wheatkings that begins with the iconic Loon song, and addresses many aspects of Canadian life and history including the overturned conviction of an innocent man. Those called Wheatkings were actually great farmers in Saskatchewan that developed a strain of grain that grew faster thereby feeding more hungry people in the short summer season. The lyrics are buried deep in me “Wheatkings and pretty things, lets just see what tomorrow brings”.
WHY US?
We’re small and that’s not a bad thing. We are 100% verifiable and we love the French Bulldog for all of its wonderful traits, above all else as your faithful, funny, wonderful companion.
We love the beautiful colors that have become widely available, however we only breed standard colours such as pied, brindle, fawn and cream.
Most importantly, health and disposition are our paramount concern. We have partnered with several well-respected and knowledgeable breeders to pair our dogs with the best possible matches. It’s not just about color. We want to bring disposition, structure and athleticism to a healthy litter that will include your next best friend(s).
